Ahoy There! T-shirt Refashion Tutorial xXx

Hey folks!

I thought it about time I had another shot at a tutorial.

This time I am going a little out of my comfort zone, trying something new, a challenge!

A few weeks back my brother had a clear out and, as usual, he was under strict instructions NOT to throw any clothes away without first being inspected by myself for any useful buttons, zips, or just fabric in general. He buys some crazy stuff you would be amazed at some of the treasures I saved from going in the bin.

Anyway, I found a t-shirt was just lying there all unused, unwanted and striped (who doesn’t love a bit of stripey?) and I saw the perfect opportunity to test myself and try a refashion. Now refashions are not something I try often, I’m more of a ‘start from scratch’ kind gal. However, after trying my hand at jazzing up this plain old t-shirt and being so pleased with the result, not to mention enjoying the process so much, I can seriously see myself partaking in a few more refashions this year and hopefully create some more tutorials alongside.

Ahoy there!

So without further ado, here is a step by step of the process I took to create this lovely top.

I hope you can read the notes, the striped fabric makes you dizzy if you stare at it for too long :D

This is where I started, just a simple, non fitted t- shirt that was relatively my size (give or take a few inches)

The change in sleeves really made a huge difference to the fit and look of this top. They took it from frumpy to flattering. Boyish to super girly!

This is an optional step that completely depends on the starting garment you choose to refashion. I found that, by taking off the sleeves, it left the sides and under arm holes gaping a little and so taking it in was necessary, plus it helps add a little extra shape. The trick is to keep this step simple, just try it on, pin it and sew it. You don’t want it overly fitted, just not baggy :D

You can use the neckline of you garment as a base to sketch these pattern pieces, just remember to add a seam allowance!

The white lines show my stitch lines. then just fold the right way round and iron flat.

I made my bias binding out of the same material as the collar, but you could choose anything or buy it pre-made.

And there you have it, a wearable new shirt with an adorable peter pan collar! Much better than a frumpy, shapeless and plain old tshirt!

My cat Sidney decided to keep me company during my refashioning adventures. I think him and his snoring provided me with lots of good luck so as it would turn out great!

I would love to hear what you think of my refashion, and also if you found the tutorial helpful (or not) I am always on the look out for helpful hints and tips.

For example a great tip I learnt was to make sure I spell everything correctly otherwise you have to go back and edit all the pictures again from scratch because you simply can’t post a tutorial full of spelling mistakes! Silly me :P

Thanks for stopping by

  1. This is lovely – I love refashioning clothes although I think that’s also partly because I can’t bear to throw ANYTHING away. You just watch – in a couple of years it’ll be me on that ‘hoarder next door’ show saying, but that broken zip might come in useful as a trim! I love the red with the stripes and you’re right the sleeves make it much more girly! xxx

  2. I LOVE this refashion! You are so adept with a sewing machine, my friend. I am lovin’ the Peter Pan look in general these days, and the pop of color in this garment just makes it a show-stopper. Way to go. Pinning this like its hot!

  3. I love this shirt, such an improvement! Great job!
